The Elephant's Footprint

  • Kadampa Meditation Center Indianapolis 4010 West 86th Street Indianapolis, IN, 46268 United States (map)
When many different animals have been in a field and have left their footprints we see that it is the elephant who leaves the deepest footprint. In a similar way, when we have practiced many different meditations we will experience their effects; but it is the meditation on death that makes the deepest impression on our mind.
— Buddha

We know that things are always changing, everything comes to an end, and everyone eventually dies, but we are often shocked when people pass away or situations change suddenly. This shows that our knowledge of death and impermanence is superficial.

When our knowledge of impermanence touches our heart, everything changes. We can see this with people who have near-death experiences: they usually gain a new sense of meaning and purpose in their lives. We can experience a similar transformation through practicing the simple but profound meditations in this mini-retreat.

Everyone welcome!
No experience necessary.
