The Thursday evening class introduces basic Buddhist view, meditation and action, along with various other teachings and practices, to help people deepen their knowledge and experience of Buddhism. All the teachings are based on commentaries by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

Fred May has been a student of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso for over 15 years, and has been teaching for more than a decade. He is also a nursing professor at the University of Indianapolis. Fred is a sincere practitioner with a wealth of knowledge on mala making and statue filling. He continues to play a large role in the growth and continuation of Kadampa Meditation Indianapolis.
Q. What are some benefits of attending meditation classes?
Through sincerely training in meditation on the teachings given in these classes you will attain spiritual realizations, which lead you to permanent liberation from all the sufferings of this life and countless future lives. There is no greater meaning than this. Even temporarily, whenever you experience problems, unpleasant feelings, depression or unhappiness you can solve these problems immediately by transforming your mind into peace through your meditation practice. The benefits of meditation are immeasurable.
Q. Do I need to have experience in meditation or Buddhism to attend the classes?
You do not need to have experience in meditation or be a Buddhist to attend. The meditation classes we offer are suitable for all individuals, whatever their level of interest- from those who seek simple relaxation and stress relief, to those who wish to learn about Modern Buddhism. Everyone is welcome!
Q. I’ve never been to a Buddhist Center before. What should I expect?
Classes at the Center are very accessible. You do not need to bring any mats or wear any special clothing. Both chairs and cushions are available at the Center, so you can sit wherever you’re most comfortable. There is no physical exercise, yoga, or stretching involved. When entering the meditation room, it is traditional to take off shoes and hats. Also, when the Teacher arrives, we normally stand out of respect for Buddha’s teachings.
Q. What does a typical class look like?
A typical class consists of a simple relaxation meditation, a short teaching, and inspiring prayers (we have prayer booklets so you can follow along if you wish). The meditations are guided and are suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
Q. I’ve been coming to classes for a while. I really like what I hear. Is there something more I can try?
For those students who want to deepen their experience of Buddhism. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso designed the Foundation Program (FP) FP allows us to become more deeply familiar with Buddhist teachings by systematically studying one of five texts on the FP curriculum.
